Another Memphis police officer fired after violent arrest and death of Tire Nichols

Another Memphis police officer has been fired for violating multiple department policies related to the death of Tire Nichols, the Memphis Police Department said Friday.

Former police officer Preston Hemphill was relieved of his duties for violating multiple departmental policies, including personal conduct and truthfulness, the Memphis Police Department said in a news release.

Hemphill, who was hired by the department in March 2018, was fired on January 30, police said. The former officer was heard saying on body camera footage “I hope he gets stomped on his ass.”

Earlier this Friday, two first responders were suspended by the Tennessee Division of Emergency Medical Services after they failed to provide emergency care and treatment the night Tire Nichols was detained by police, the agency announced.

The medical services division said Robert Long and JaMichael Lamar Sandridge failed to provide basic emergency care for 19 minutes despite the fact that Nichols “showed clear signs of distress, including the inability to sit up and lie on his stomach multiple times.”
