Homemade bombs found in Ireland ahead of Biden’s visit

The Police of Northern Ireland (PSNI) reported that four devices, which it described as viable pipe bombs (homemade bombs), were recovered in Creggan, Derry, this Tuesday before the visit of the president of the United States, Joe Biden, to Ireland.

“Police can confirm that four artifacts recovered within the Creggan Town Cemetery grounds yesterday, Tuesday 12 April, were viable pipe bombs,” the PSNI said in a statement.

The Derry City and Strabane area commanding officer, Superintendent Nigel Goddard, said he believed the devices “would have been used to attack police and injure our officers”, saying: “These actions have been witnessed of the exploitation of the youth in the illegal parade, with complete disregard for public safety”.

Goddard said the main line of investigation into the incident is attributed to the New IRA; however, he added that the Terrorism Investigation Unit is still investigating.
