His main point is not that the AI rally is about to collapse immediately, but that every major technology investment boom eventually loses momentum. Because today’s AI spending has become so large, even a modest reversal could damage economic growth and stock markets in the United States, Britain and Europe.

The scale of the current boom is extraordinary. Annual investment in technology equipment and software has reached about $1.5 trillion, roughly 70% higher than the inflation-adjusted peak of the late-1990s technology, media and telecom bubble. AI-related spending by major technology companies is also rising rapidly, with AI capital expenditure could reach $800 billion in 2026 and $1.12 trillion in 2027.

But the warning is that the economy has become more exposed to this investment cycle than many investors realize. Even a 5% drop in U.S. technology investment could reduce real GDP in the U.S., Britain and the eurozone by up to one percentage point in the year after the shock. That would not necessarily create a deep crisis by itself, but it could push already fragile economies dangerously close to recession. The U.S. might recover faster because it is more dynamic, while Europe could struggle for longer.

The stock market impact could be much worse. Some models predict three possible endings to the AI investment boom: a mild correction, a normal tech-linked recession and a full crash similar to the dot-com bust. In the mild case, a 4.5% decline in tech investment could still produce a roughly 15% drawdown in U.S. stocks and more than 20% in European markets. In a more typical tech recession, U.S. markets could fall more than 20%, while European shares could drop more than 30%.

The most severe scenario would be a full technology-media-telecom-style crash. In that case, equity drawdowns could exceed 50%, meaning investors would face losses comparable to some of the worst modern market collapses. Europe might be hit harder because U.S. investors often repatriate money during global stress, creating forced selling abroad. European investors may also pull capital home, but the net effect can still leave European stocks under greater pressure.

But the concern is where investors might hide if the AI trade turns. Cash would likely be safest in a severe crash, but investors who need to remain in equities may want to look at sectors less tied to AI spending. The data model highlights European construction and infrastructure, especially because Germany has committed major long-term infrastructure spending equal to about 12.5% of GDP over the next decade. It also points to European pharmaceuticals and food companies, which tend to be more defensive and less exposed to the AI cycle.

Overall, there is a warning against complacency. The AI boom may continue for some time, and today’s technology giants are stronger than many dot-com-era companies. But the size of current investment means a slowdown would not stay contained inside Silicon Valley. It could hit GDP, stock markets and global capital flows. The message is simple: investors should prepare before the boom reverses, not after panic begins.

Investors should stop asking whether the artificial intelligence boom will end and start asking what will happen when it slows.
