Prosecutors are seeking to set a January trial date for Donald Trump in the case where he is accused of plotting to overturn his 2020 election loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The request for a 2 January 2024 start of the trial came from prosecutors in Special Counsel Jack Smith’s office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If approved, that date would clash with the Republican presidential primaries, with Trump currently the front-runner to clinch the nomination again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The date is just under two weeks before the first votes are set to be cast in Iowa’s caucuses scheduled for 15 January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr Smith’s office argues that a speedy trial is in the public interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That interest, the prosecutors say, is “of particular significance here, where the defendant, a former president, is charged with conspiring to overturn the legitimate results of the 2020 presidential election, obstruct the certification of the election results, and discount citizens’ legitimate votes.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prosecutors believe it will take about four to six weeks to put forward the bulk of their case against Trump at trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But the former president’s lawyers have already said they will try to slow things down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trump last week pleaded not guilty to charges over the alleged election conspiracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
