Chinese tech giant Huawei\u2019s chips still \u201clag behind the United States by one generation,\u201d state media quoted its founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei as saying in a rare interview on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Washington last month unveiled fresh guidelines warning firms that using Chinese-made high-tech AI semiconductors, specifically Huawei\u2019s Ascend chips, would put them at risk of violating US export controls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Shenzhen-based company has been at the centre of an intense standoff between the economic supergiants after Washington warned its equipment could be used for espionage by Beijing, an allegation Huawei denies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking to the People\u2019s Daily, the official newspaper of the ruling Communist Party, 80-year-old Ren insisted the United States had \u201cexaggerated\u201d Huawei\u2019s achievements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tougher controls in recent years have prevented US chip giant Nvidia, one of Huawei\u2019s rivals, from selling certain AI semiconductors \u2014 widely regarded as the most advanced in the world \u2014 to Chinese firms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As a result, it is now facing tougher competition from local players in the crucial market, including Huawei.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nvidia\u2019s chief executive Jensen Huang told reporters last month that Chinese companies \u201care very, very talented and very determined, and the export control gave them the spirit, the energy and the government support to accelerate their development.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But Ren said Huawei was \u201cnot that great yet\u201d, according to the article published on the newspaper\u2019s front page Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMany companies in China are making chips, and quite a few are doing well \u2014 Huawei is just one of them,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When asked about \u201cexternal blockades and suppression\u201d \u2014 a veiled reference to US export restrictions on Beijing \u2014 Ren said he had \u201cnever thought about it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDon\u2019t dwell on the difficulties, just get the job done and move forward step by step,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sanctions since 2019 have curtailed the firm\u2019s access to US-made components and technologies, forcing it to diversify its growth strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
