{"id":8632,"date":"2025-07-07T18:45:40","date_gmt":"2025-07-07T22:45:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/miaminewsnetwork.com\/?p=8632"},"modified":"2025-07-07T18:45:41","modified_gmt":"2025-07-07T22:45:41","slug":"trump-extends-deadline-for-tiktok-sale-by-90-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/miaminewsnetwork.com\/?p=8632","title":{"rendered":"Trump extends deadline for TikTok sale by 90 days"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>President Donald Trump announced Thursday he had given social media platform TikTok another 90 days to find a non-Chinese buyer or be banned in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve just signed the Executive Order extending the Deadline for the TikTok closing for 90 days (September 17, 2025),\u201d Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, putting off the ban for the third time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A federal law requiring TikTok\u2019s sale or ban on national security grounds was due to take effect the day before Trump\u2019s January inauguration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Republican, whose 2024 election campaign relied heavily on social media, has previously said he is fond of the video-sharing app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have a little warm spot in my heart for TikTok,\u201d Trump said in an NBC News interview in early May. \u201cIf it needs an extension, I would be willing to give it an extension.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TikTok on Thursday welcomed Trump\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are grateful for President Trump\u2019s leadership and support in ensuring that TikTok continues to be available for more than 170 million American users,\u201d said a statement issued by the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Digital Cold War? \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump said in May that a group of purchasers was ready to pay TikTok owner ByteDance \u201ca lot of money\u201d for the video-clip-sharing sensation\u2019s US operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump has repeatedly downplayed risks that TikTok is in danger, saying he remains confident of finding a buyer for the app\u2019s US business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The White House had announced Monday that Trump would throw the wildly popular video-sharing app, which has almost two billion global users, another lifeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During this new grace period the administration will work \u201cto ensure this deal is closed so that the American people can continue to use TikTok with the assurance that their data is safe and secure,\u201d the administration said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The president is \u201cjust not motivated to do anything about TikTok,\u201d said independent analyst Rob Enderle. \u201cUnless they get on his bad side, TikTok is probably going to be in pretty good shape.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump had long supported a ban or divestment, but reversed his position and vowed to defend the platform after coming to believe it helped him win young voters\u2019 support in the November election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Motivated by national security fears and a belief in Washington that TikTok is controlled by the Chinese government, the ban took effect on January 19, one day before Trump\u2019s inauguration, with ByteDance having made no attempt to find a suitor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TikTok \u201chas become a symbol of the US-China tech rivalry; a flashpoint in the new Cold War for digital control,\u201d said Shweta Singh, an assistant professor of information systems at Warwick Business School in Britain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The president announced an initial 75-day delay of the ban upon taking office. A second extension pushed the deadline to June 19.
