Nashville shooting: video shows images of the police shooting at the attacker of the Covenant school

The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department released body camera footage Tuesday of the two officers who entered the Covenant School Monday and fatally shot the person responsible for the mass shooting.

The footage comes from the body cameras of Officers Rex Engelbert and Michael Collazo, who police say fatally shot the person responsible for the shooting Monday at 10:27 a.m. The videos show a group of five officers entering the school amid the sound of fire alarms and immediately going into various rooms searching for the suspicious person.

They heard gunshots on the second floor, so they rushed upstairs as the rumblings grew louder, video shows. The agents approached the noise of the shots and Engelbert, armed with an assault rifle, turned a corner and shot several times at a person who was near a window, who fell to the ground, the video shows.

The release of the video comes as Nashville police investigate the background and motivations of the 28-year-old shooter named Audrey Hale, who authorities say carefully planned the attack.

The attack was the 19th shooting at a US school or university in 2023 in which at least one person was injured, according to a CNN tally, and the deadliest since the May attack in Uvalde, Texas, that left 21 people dead. There have been 42 shootings at elementary, middle and high schools since the Uvalde attack.
