Sale of alcohol in Miami Beach may have a new time restriction

Travelers who head to South Beach, Miami for the bars and nightclubs that party until dawn may find that the parties don’t last as long as they used to.

A judge ruled Tuesday that the closing time for alcohol sales in parts of South Beach could be changed, from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 2 a.m. after several attempts by Miami Beach officials to address complaints from city residents about nightclubs.

“Hopefully we can start implementing the law very soon,” Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber said in a Facebook post after Tuesday’s decision. “This is a residential neighborhood that shouldn’t have to put up with 24-hour nightclubs.”

Under the rule, “private clubs located in” Miami Beach’s mixed-use entertainment district south of 16th Street, known as MXE, “may only offer alcoholic beverages for sale or consumption on the premises between 8 a.m. :00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m.”

In previous years, Miami Beach officials have voted to temporarily limit alcohol sales in the district until 2 a.m. for the spring break season.
