Denver’s ArtistiCO Brings Día de los Muertos to Life in a Moving Tribute to Mexican Heritage and Eternal Love

A Colorado dance company is celebrating the richness of Mexican culture through a theatrical production that transforms the experience of grief into a tribute to life, memory and enduring love.

Denver-based ArtistiCO Dance Company presented Amor Eterno, a performance inspired by Día de los Muertos, at the Lakewood Cultural Center on October 29 and 30, 2026. Combining Mexican music, dance and storytelling, the production invites audiences to honor loved ones who have died while celebrating the traditions that keep their memories alive.

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican cultural tradition observed primarily on November 1 and 2. Families commemorate deceased relatives through decorated altars, photographs, flowers, candles and favorite foods.

Although the holiday acknowledges death, its central message emphasizes remembrance rather than despair. ArtistiCO translates this philosophy into a performance that combines traditional Mexican artistic expression with themes of family, cultural identity and emotional connection.

The production introduces audiences to the significance of remembrance while demonstrating how cultural traditions can communicate experiences shared across generations. According to ArtistiCO co-founder and CEO José Rosales, the idea for Amor Eterno emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During that period, the company began reflecting on how Latino families in Colorado experienced grief and honored those they had lost. The pandemic created an opportunity for the dancers to explore how artistic expression could help communities process difficult emotions.

Rosales believes the experience of losing someone important transcends cultural and national boundaries. Rather than presenting grief as something people must eventually overcome, the production explores how individuals learn to live with loss while preserving meaningful memories.

Its title, Amor Eterno, translates to Eternal Love, reflecting the belief that emotional connections can endure beyond death. The production is dedicated to celebrated Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, whose paintings explored identity, physical suffering, personal relationships and resilience.

Kahlo’s artistic legacy provides a meaningful connection to the performance’s exploration of memory and emotional expression. Her influence also reinforces ArtistiCO’s commitment to celebrating Mexican creativity and sharing important cultural figures with broader audiences.

Through recognizable Mexican musical compositions, the dancers create an atmosphere intended to evoke nostalgia, affection and reflection. The combination of music and movement allows audiences to experience the production’s themes without relying entirely on spoken language.

ArtistiCO Dance Company aims to connect communities through performances rooted in Mexican cultural traditions. Its work provides opportunities for audiences unfamiliar with Día de los Muertos to discover the holiday’s deeper meaning.

For Mexican American families, the production also offers a chance to recognize familiar traditions represented on a professional stage. Rosales hopes attendees will leave not only entertained but also with a stronger appreciation for cultural heritage and the importance of remembering loved ones.

The performance demonstrates how the arts can create shared experiences among people from different backgrounds. As Día de los Muertos receives increasing attention across the United States, productions such as Amor Eterno help preserve the cultural meaning behind the celebration.

They also encourage audiences to reflect on their own family histories and relationships. For ArtistiCO, the performance is ultimately about more than honoring the dead. It is about celebrating the lasting influence of those who have shaped people’s lives.

Through music, dance and cultural storytelling, Amor Eterno presents remembrance as an expression of love, demonstrating how traditions can bring communities together across generations.
